Works Outing: a Means of Forming Teams

Definition, Explanation Tips, Checklist

Definition, Explanation

A works outing helps to improve team spirit and communication among employees and with executives and thus have a positive influence on the working atmosphere. In an informal atmosphere, you get closer and get to know colleagues from a different point of view.

Besides the paid working hours used for the works outing, the employer often contributes towards the costs and organisation. There is no legal entitlement to this. It is rather a voluntary service of the company that should serve as motivation. As a company event, the works outing is protected by accident insurance. The costs covered by the employer are not part of the wages as long as they do not exceed 110 euros per employee. Some ideas of outings are trips to cultural events, to natural surroundings like mountain hiking, sailing, city trips, boat trips but also wine sampling and adventure trips. Own event organizers offer special works outings and take on the complete organisation. On choosing the own way, the interests and wishes of the participants should be considered. A lot of times, family members take part in works outings.

Tips, Checklist

  • All employees should be able to take part in the event
  • There is no obligation to take part. If not taking part, the employee has to perform his normal work on the day of the works outing
  • If an emergency service is necessary to maintain the companies' requirements, then the conclusion of a company agreement with the works council is recommended. If there is no works council or no agreement is concluded, then volunteers are to be looked for. If none are found, then employers not partaking in the works outing are to be defined for the emergency service
  • If the works outing lasts longer than normal working hours, then additional pay cannot be demanded
  • There is no entitlement to the employer covering the costs. Clarify beforehand, which costs and how much they are, you have to bear
  • Should you extend the works outing by getting together with a few colleagues, you are no longer protected by statutory accident insurance as this is seen as a private get-together
